Meta Avatars Overview
Using the Meta Avatars SDK, developers can provide user-created Meta Avatars to increase social presence and enhance VR immersion. Avatars are provided as modularized full-bodied torsos that allow users the flexibility to create their own unique identity persistent across the Oculus ecosystem. Leveraging advanced body tracking, realistic Avatar poses can be extrapolated from the Oculus headset and Touch controllers to provide users a sense of self in a VR world.

What’s Included in the SDK?
The Meta Avatars Unity plugin includes prefabs, scripts, and assets that allows convenient access to all available functionality, along with several samples including:

Loading custom avatars via Meta’s web API

Downloads
There are two ways to download the Meta Avatars SDK.

The Meta Avatars SDK is available as a separate package for Unity on the Oculus Downloads page.

You can also download Meta Avatars SDK package from ODH. This way, the ODH Package Manager can notify you whenever there is a new update available. .

What’s New

Eye Glint - The "eye glint" feature can be demonstrated by using either the Khronos or the Horizon shader. This feature increases the specular highlight in an artistic way to meet our visual goals. This makes the eye glints visible from as many angles as possible.

Non-Advanced LOD System - The “Advanced LOD System” checkbox has been deprecated and will now always be enabled.

OvrAvatarInputManager classes call InitializeTracking directly.

Add clientName initializationInfo parameter, split clientName out of clientVersion string. Add company name for reference.

Add OvrSkinningCompute.cginc for compute shader skinning.

What’s Fixed

Quest2 will no longer be detected as Quest1.

Fixed ambiguous operator warnings in debug visualizations.

Resolved a streaming hash collision between certain hierarchy versions that would cause retargeting to run when not necessary.

Fixed a lower body difference between hierarchy versions which would cause non-trivial retargeting to run when streaming, even though the lower body is not used.

Fixed Per-frame GC.Alloc for experimental MotionSmoothing feature.

Reverified "Horizon" and "Khronos" shaders for compatibility with Unity Universal Rendering Pipeline (URP).

Improvements

Input Tracking Refactor - Updated the controller tracking and button input paradigm to match other tracking types. The Meta Avatars SDK now polls the application rather than waiting for push data from the app.

Load State API Refactor - The OvrAvatarEntity "LoadState" field and corresponding LoadingStateChanged events were marked obsolete. They will be fully removed in a future release. Updated states explicitly tell you when the Default Model is loaded vs. when the real avatar is loaded.

Reduced peak memory usage while loading avatars.

Minor performance optimizations to Critical Joints updates.

Switched avatar rendering budget from using vertices to triangles for more accurate cost evaluation.

Changed C# default for OvrAvatarManager.minSliceWorkPerFrame to improve OvrAvatarManager loading.

Reduced per frame overhead when updating OvrAvatarSkinnedMeshRenderables.

Optimized dispatch of gpu skinning draw calls.

Load Times Improvements - Reduced Avatar temporary memory usage during loading. Loading time reduced by ~35%. Improved texture quality, no additional memory or performance cost for this.

Known Issues

In the Mirror scene, Avatar's neck gets deformed when moving away.

Outfit of one of the Preset Avatars is slightly deformed in LOD2.
